      This book is for beginners of Translation. It presents basic methods and techniques of translation. The book provides a stimulating discussion of French-English translation and offers useful. Quintilian was the celebrated orator and rhetorician from the first century who brought forward rhetorical theory from ancient Greece and from the heyday of Roman rhetoric in the prior century. This theory he compiled in his Institutio Oratoria, an exhaustive and pedagogically oriented treatement of rhetoric in twelve books.

      Catford’s book A Linguistic Theory of Translation: An Essay in Applied Linguistics () was perhaps the last major work written on this assumption, in which he defined translation as comprising a “substitution of TL [i.e., Target Language] meanings for SL [i.e., Source Language] meanings” (quoted in Bassnett, 15). Theory is a contemplative and rational type of abstract or generalizing thinking, or the results of such thinking. Depending on the context, the results might for example include generalized explanations of how nature works. The word has its roots in ancient Greek, but in modern use it has taken on several different related meanings.
